The subversion of American democracy

A Republican report on FBI politicisation is the tip of an iceberg

Before today’s mid-term elections in America, President Joe Biden warned that democracy itself was on the ballot. “We know in our bones that our democracy’s at risk and we know that this is your moment to defend it”, he said.

Exactly right. Only thing is, democracy isn’t at risk from the Republican party, as he suggests, but from his own side.

It’s the Democrats who have presided over a wilful descent into lawlessness and anarchy in many American cities — and over a gross abuse of process by some of the key institutions tasked with maintaining the rule of law.

The extent of this institutionalised abuse became clear this week with the publication last Friday of a report from Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee. Its title, FBI whistleblowers: what their disclosures indicate about the politicisation of the FBI and Justice Department,  indicates the explosive nature of its contents. 

If anyone still requires an explanation of why so many millions of Americans have become so alienated from America’s political establishment and believe it works against the interests of ordinary people, this report lays it out in stark detail.
