In the late 1990s, I wanted to write a book about what I viewed as a dangerous upheaval in relationships between men and women. It seemed to me that the bargain between the sexes was breaking down to such an extent that sexual identity itself was in danger of being destroyed.
Having already been “cancelled” by the left for more than a decade on account of my challenges to progressive orthodoxies across the board, I couldn’t find a publisher. Eventually the Social Market Foundation, an open-minded think-tank that was sympathetic to my views, agreed to publish it. In 1999, the book duly appeared. It was entitled: The Sex-Change Society: Feminised Britain and the Neutered Male.
Shortly before it saw the light of day, however, the SMF had a change of political identity and became more left-wing. Although it was contractually bound to publish my book, it was reluctant to have anything to do with it. Accordingly, no publicity or promotion was organised and the book went out of print not long afterwards.
In recent years, certain developments — such as the emergence of “transgender”— have made The Sex-Change Society look uncannily prescient. On a couple of occasions, I’ve quoted short extracts from it on this website, and some readers have expressed frustration that they can’t obtain a copy anywhere.
I’m therefore offering the entire book to my paying subscribers in daily instalments. They’ve appeared over the past ten weekdays.
You’ll need to scroll to the end of each chapter if you want to check any of the footnotes. Although some of the references in the book relate to people and developments of the time, I hope there’s enough in it to interest everyone, and help explain the sexual revolution through which we’ve been living — and with whose consequences we are now having to grapple.
The introductory chapter appeared on 27 December. All pieces will be available to paying subscribers on my website. Here’s today’s final chapter: A Policy for all the Family.
